I don't usually talk about the news, but the St. Louis Dispatch has an interesting article on using virtual reality equipment to induce the sense of an out of body experience.
In the experiment reported in the article, researchers used virtual reality goggles to project an image of the subject's body as seen from the rear as a three dimensional image. As the article says
When their backs were stroked in sync with the virtual image, participants reported feeling that their consciousness had been transported to the body in front of them.
I'm not sure what to make of this, but it's an interesting experiment and deserves follow research.
