Do these sentences make sense?
Tomorrow I went to the store.
Yesterday I will go out to dinner.
Quick, what are you thinking about now.
The words you're reading?
The words you'll read next?
Whether you should listen to the podcast?
What you'll be doing tonight?
Both sets of sentences illustrate the same thing in different ways. Whatever we're doing, usually we aren't actually doing it. While one part of our mind and body attends to the task at hand, a large part of our awareness is in the past or future, thinking about what has been or what will be. We end the day looking back and thinking Where did the day go?, not able to remember a large part of what we did, and not really experiencing the full impact of the events of our own lives.
It doesn't have to be that way.
This episode of the Shards of Consciousness podcast is based on a post I wrote in March, 2007 called What will I do later?.
