Fireflies

Fireflies

Pieces of life, bits of thought
Visions of places and people seen
Swirl and gyre, constellate and separate,
Then return to the shadows
To hide unremembered
Until a fleeting smile brings them
Flashing to the light
To once again swirl and gyre,
Constellate and separate,
Flashes of fire in the night,
Fireflies flitting through the soul.

A woman's face, a baby's smile,
A dog struck by a car and
Left to cry in pain alone.
Hidden laughter, sun-warmed breeze,
Cause an electric prickle of my scalp
As unsought feelings come, then fade.
Fireflies all,
Pieces of life, bits of thought
That swirl and gyre, constellate and separate,
Then return to the shadows.
